Life Lessons — Self Promotion

Being a Wizard of Self Promotion

“Rich people are usually leaders, and all great leaders are great promoters. To be a leader, you must inherently have followers and supporters, which means that you have to be adept at selling, inspiring, and motivating people to buy into your vision.

In short, any leader who can’t or won’t promote will not be a leader for long, be it in politics, business, sports, or even as a parent. I’m harping on this because leaders earn a heck of a lot more money than followers!”

–T. Harv Eker
Secrets of the Millionaire Mind, pg 104

Joe Vitale has sometimes been referred to as a Wizard of Self-Promotion.

In a previous life, (Pre-Millionaire Mind Intensive) I would have probably thought that was a bad thing. I have assiduously avoided self-promotion and anything to do with sales all my life. My personal behavior blueprint was strictly, By your works you shall be known.” I fully believed that my good work” was all I needed to “Speak” for me. I was proud that 100% of my customer base was referrals from other clients. Until I participated in my first Millionaire Mind Intensive, I saw “sales” as being pushy, imposing my views and or belief’s onto others. Working first with the Wealth Principles of the Secrets of the Millionaire Mind and later with the writings of Joe Vitale, and others, I have started to change the beliefs and habits of a lifetime.

To say I am moving out of my comfort zone would be an understatement.

To help me stretch my self-promotion muscles I started with T. Harv Eker’s advice about modeling the behavior of those folks who have experienced outrageous promotional success. As I read Joe Vitale’s books and blogs, I realized how often he had used business innovators of the past as inspiration for his own Hypnotic Marketing promotions. Through Joe, I reacquainted myself with Napoleon Hill’s classic work, Think and Grow Rich. As I read that book again, I thought of the other great self-promoters of the early 20th century. Biographies of corporate titans, researched and written by respected business historians or management scholars are a great source of inspiration and solid business and life lessons.

Thomas Edison is an Icon of Innovation and represents that particular brand of American genius, entrepreneur/inventor. Edison is one of America’s best-known ‘commercial inventors’. He accumulated more than 1000 patents and is credited with inventing the incandescent light bulb, the phonograph, and more infamously, the electric chair.

In his book, “The Wizard of Menlo Park: How Thomas Alva Edison Invented the Modern World, author Richard Stross reminds his readers that Edison was the most famous American of his era, eclipsing the name recognition of even Henry Ford and Theodore Roosevelt. Edison’s “Wizardry” was the use of “his self-generated star status to advance his commercial agenda, much as (Steve) Jobs today uses carefully crafted showmanship and media manipulation when he introduces the latest ‘I-gizmo’ to adoring audiences”

The biography is an unflinching, honest one that acknowledges that the remarkable inventor Edison for all his genius at self-promotion had personal and professional weaknesses that would diminish his final legacy. The book gives the reader an insight into the both the light and dark side of innovative entrepreneurship and the value of promotion in any successful enterprise.

Which brings me back to Secrets of the Millionaire Mind and

Wealth File # 8

Rich people are willing to promote themselves and their value.
Poor people think negatively about selling and promotion.

“Discussing how some individuals react to promotion…
They resent any promotion regardless of how it might benefit them. If this sounds like you, it’s an important characteristic to notice about yourself. Resenting promotion is one of the greatest obstacles to success. People who have issues with selling and promotion are usually broke.”

Express Yourself!

Wealth File #8

Rich people are willing to promote themselves and their value.
Poor people people think negatively about selling and promotion.

“…Rich people are almost always excellent promoters. They can and are willing to promote their products, their services, and their ideas with passion and enthusiasm.”

During the January Cash Flow game-day wrap-up, Loraine Boyden shared some Millionaire Mind insights about the importance of business coaches and mentors. She stated that her first business mentor stressed consistent, outstanding communication skills as the basis of any successful business enterprise. Their coach encouraged Loraine and John join a local Toastmasters organization to hone their public speaking skills. Both Loraine and John credited their Toastmaster’s experience with increasing their confidence and improving their speaking and promotional skills and recommended the experience to other Millionaire Mind Intensive graduates.

What is the Toastmasters Experience?

Toastmasters’ members learn by speaking to groups and working with others in a supportive environment. Toastmasters have helped men and women improve their communication and leadership skills. Through regular meetings and speaking opportunities at member clubs, people achieve their full potential, realize their dreams, and improve their communication skills.

Most people say they joined Toastmasters because they want to feel more secure when speaking in public – even before a small group. For example, in a departmental meeting, an employee may have real knowledge about the job, but lack the ability to communicate his or her ideas to other members of the group. The Toastmasters program can be tailored to meet your personal objectives. Whether you desire improvement in prepared or impromptu speaking, greater skill in the use of visual aids, experience and knowledge can be gained in the areas that most interest you.

Through participation in the Toastmasters Communication and Leadership program, people from all backgrounds can lose their fear of public speaking, learn to speak effectively, conduct a meeting, manage a department or business, lead, delegate, and motivate.

Experienced professionals and beginning speakers alike can benefit from the Toastmasters’ programs. Whether speaking to the board of directors, your customers, your co-workers or your kids, Toastmasters can help you do it better. You’ll learn and practice in a friendly, comfortable environment with people who are there for the same reason you are—to become better communicators.

Finding a local Toastmaster’s Club

Look for a club near you.

Some Toastmaster clubs meet in the morning, some during lunch, others at night. Find the one that best suits your schedule and then contact them.

Success Traits

“Success is not something you wait for, but rather something you should pursue. Don’t wait for extraordinary opportunities to find you. Seize common everyday occasions and make them great. Act on your dreams and they shall be yours.”

…is afraid of winning.
…has to.
…is part of the problem.
…talks about it.
…makes promises.

So how are you doing?

It was reprinted from The 6 Success Strategies for Winning at Life, Love and Business by Wolf J. Rinke (Health Communications, Inc.).

Wealth File # 5
Rich people focus on opportunities.
Poor people focus on obstacles.

“Rich people see opportunities. Poor people see obstacles. Rich people see potential growth. Poor people see potential loss. Rich people focus on the rewards. Poor people focus on risks… Poor people make choices based on fear. Their minds are constantly scanning for what is wrong or could go wrong in any situation. Their primary mind-set is, “What if it doesn’t work?” or, more often, “It won’t work.”

“Rich people, as we’ve said earlier, take responsibility for the results in their lives and act upon the mind-set, “It will work because I’ll make it work. Rich people expect to succeed. They have confidence in their creativity, and they believe that should the doo-doo hit the fan, they can find another way to succeed.”
